decouvrir le jeu

the tool used for our public consultation workshops

the «Jeu des 1000 modes»

A “serious game” that helps participants explore, in a playful and engaging way, how public street space is shared between different uses and modes of transport. It is used as a facilitation tool during public consultations and co-design workshops.

Developed by todomodo, the “Jeu des 1000 modes” is a decision-making tool that places you in the role of a public space planner.

After a brief overview to key-challenges and recommended dimensions based on current best practices, participants are invited to recreate a familiar street or public space from their own town. Working in groups, they then experiment with introcing a new mode - such as a bike lane - into the existing layout. These process raises awareness  of both the complexity of decision‑making and the physical constraints of public space.

The different ways of sharing road space can be visually represented on a map, allowing participants to create and compare scenarios—with or without parking, with or without cars, and beyond

appreciate public space

The game uses a set of cards representing the different elements that make up public realm. Each element is drawn to scale, showing the space allocated to each mode of transport, along with cross-sections of a typical street in your neighbourhood.

Working as a group, you will collectively design a public space, taking into account the constraints of the existing environment, as well as regulations, and guidelines.

collaborate and make decisions

Participants design a consensual scenario for a  street assembling the game cards: sidewalks of different widths, bike lanes, bus lanes, tram tracks, carriageways, parking spaces, green areas, and more.

The aim is to highlight the limited nature of public space and to encourage open dialogue about individual needs, collective interests, and the trade‑offs required to deliver a balanced and feasible project.

tailor-made workshops

The game “Jeu des 1000 modes” is thought to be included in a consultation process related to an ongoing project or as part of an education program.

We can conduct workshops in various contexts: city centre revitalization, traffic calming, bike plans, the introduction of new public transit, etc.

approach

The "Jeu des 1000 Modes" is part of todomodo’s participatory design approach, promoting calmer, more efficient, and shared urban spaces that balance the needs of all users and modes of transport.

how todomodo delivers participatory design workshops ?
our role: support you in creating a community-led public realm, by helping to  clarify what is feasible, technically possible and desirable for a given space, while fostering inclusive and constructive dialogue.

We encourage inclusive dialogue, structure the conversation, and guide participants through a co-design process to shape public spaces that reflect local aspirations. As specialists in mobility and public space planning, we bring our expertise and experience in architecture and landscape design to support shared learning and collective decision-making.

Each workshop is tailored to the specific location and audience. Designed for elected officials, city councils technical staff and residents, the Jeu des 1000 Modes provides an engaging framework for collective thinking about the organisation and design of public spaces.
